Throw a “We’re Going to the Dogs!” Party

The 2009 AKC Eukanuba National Championship Dog Show

It’s the perfect occasion to paw-ty—the premiere broadcast of the year’s most entertaining dog show, on Saturday, February 6th. Invite some of your dog-loving friends over to watch the evening’s final events.

Dog Pawty

Invite the Pack

Start with a doggy invitation using a do-it-yourself stamp or ready-made cards you can purchase online.

Better yet, make one of your own: Using a dog bone cookie cutter as a form, trace the outline onto a piece of tan construction paper. Cut it out and mount it to a plain white postcard. Put your party information inside the dog bone shape and address the reverse side.

Or if you want to get a little fancier, you can create this invitation from Top Party Ideas.

Pick Your Pooch

Which dogs are you hoping will place? You must have some faves. In this dog-beat-dog world, we’ve made it easy for you to have a friendly competition by downloading a copy of our “Bone Collector” grid for you and your pup-loving pals to keep score with.

Just make your selections before each group starts, tally your scores after each event and the one who’s collected the most winning picks—or “bones”—wins. It’s up to you to decide on a doggone great prize.

Doggy Deco

The more doggy props you have, the more fun your guests will have getting into the mood. For starters, you can serve food in inexpensive dog dishes. Pick up a rubber stamp of a dog’s paw and stamp it all over a paper tablecloth. Make everyone a headband with floppy dog ears glued to it. Plus, you can usually find dog-themed plates, napkins and tablecloths at your local party store.

Come and Get It!

You don’t have to work like a dog to serve clever dog-inspired drinks, dishes and desserts. Use recipes you already know, with a doggie twist.  We’ve provided some suggested recipe links.

Drinks: Salty Dog, Red Dog, Greyhound and British Bull Dog Cocktails

Dishes: German Shepherd’s Pie, , Dachshund Sausages w/ Schnauzer-kraut, Whippet Potatoes, Scottish Terrine Shih Tzu-shi, Chow Chow Mein

Desserts: Canine Kibble made with melted chocolate, butter and peanut butter, Chex cereal, tossed with powdered sugar, Dog Bone Sugar Cookies, and Paw Print Cake using a 9” cake and three strategically placed cupcakes. You can find cookie cutters shaped like dog bones through and internet search.

Buy ready-made canine-themed cookies, gift boxes and dog favors online at The Flour Pot.

More Canine Competitions

You can also throw a party around the some of the Eukanuba World Challenge events, which will be happening throughout the two days of the show. Thousands of pedigrees will be strutting their stuff to win one of only three final places.
